What is Blanket weed and how to get rid of it
Algae accumulation around the rim, plants and floating on and under the surface of the pond is also known as blanket weed. Its appearance is dark green and can turn your whole pond into a large pot of pea-soup with its string-like formation, attaching itself to plants and expanding out all over your pond. It can be a big problem because the blanket weed absorbs the Oxygen meant for your aquatic life if left untreated. Of course it doesn't make your pond look very attractive either! Blanket weed is caused by excessive organic material and sunlight mainly, but other factors can come into consideration. Simply changing the water will not resolve the problem. More shade is required, as this cuts down the amount of sun that the pond will receive - slowing the growth of blanket weed. So the more plants you have providing some kind of shade over the water the better, but at the same time don't over do it. You will firstly need to fishin out the blanket weed by hand (or with a stick!), or you can add a floating mesh bag of barley straw to the surface of the pond which will entangle the blanket weed. Another option is to put a pond additive in, such as Nishikoi Clear waters - Blanket weed. Which ever method you use to treat your blanket weed problem..good luck!
